Titanium...I hate the song so I can't make a fair judgement on that song but its definately not worse than some people on the live show.
I think she sounds a bit like Melanie Mccabe.
This girl obviously already has a team behind her, which is why she'd stand a better chance than the countless auditionees who have her kind of sound but not her training .
what games?
this is awesome of her and Sam Tsui also...
Some forum members host their own X Factor competitions... where members of the forum get to judge a show, and mentor their own category; choosing songs for their contestants. It's all just a bit of fun, but can get quite interesting

We are so lucky on this forum, to have such clever people to help us understand the way vocals are recorded/performed etc.
I have tried to hear the use of Autotune on this track but have failed miserably to do so! Perhaps you could take the time to explain to me and I'm sure others, where Autotune is used on the track! Also maybe you could tell us briefly, how Autotune works! Then I/we know what to listen for on future performances etc. I look forward to your reply,Thank you for your time
I could hear evidence of serious processing, and it sure sounds like the results of Antares technologyto me .Hence the "robotic" edge to her vibrato and sustaining of certain notes as the easiest traits to recognize. The "reverb "/delay is a LOT more than "just a touch". Just a touch is what singers with nearly flawless vocals and consistency use. She has a pleasant enough voice, but the effects, though reasonably well employed, are as evident as the necessity for them.
Okay, first, Antares (autotune/vocoder type effects)-For an example, the most obvious that comes to mind is Cher . Her song "Believe" used it a great deal. Her recent live performance on X Factor, also. Listen carefully, you'll hear it. By "robotic" , I am referring to the right on pitch with zero variance, mechanical sounding vibrato'd notes. Done subtly, this won't be so obvious, but will still be noticeable once you know what to listen for and recognize it.
Now, for "touch of reverb/delay", Amy Winehouse is a good example, though I can't be sure of all her recordings. If you go to my homepage/webpage in my DS profile over there in dropdown mnue <---- you'll find some recordings, mostly live, and since I recorded them, I can say for sure they have minimal effects(just the barest touch of reverb on a couple live, and slight delay only on others). The delay/reverb is often used to mimic what happens in a live setting naturally when the acoustics of a room or venue are "good". Usually, in-studio, there s a purposely "dead" sound (no natural reverb) so the effects are added to mimic live "natural" acoustics, rather than to correct /alter a singer's "natural" sound/voice. You can tell because at most, it will sound like the singer is slightly "in a cave" , but the voice will show every quirk, nuance, and flaw. You'll hear variations in tone and dynamics(volume ) on sustained notes and other things.
Heavier effects are often used on "dance" tracks, as djs suit the vocal to their sound, not the sound to the vocal .
I understand why some people wouldn't recognize "autotune" if they aren't familiar with how it is used, and hope my (very basic) post here helps explain it.
that's a very good explanation.
Mrs Diva is a singer and we're recording an album of original songs at the moment (we never do covers) and the dead area she's put in, in the studio has those sound deadening tiles around it. It sounds weird there, when you talk and there's nothing, not even the slightest touch of reverb. It's a bit like playing an acoustic guitar outside, compared with inside, when the sound bounces around the room so you hear it coming back at you as well as just the guitar.
there's one song she's recorded (a very personal and sad song) where her voice just breaks a little at the end, we kept it in, cos it adds to the feel of the track. We're lucky to have a very picky producer who picks up on every little thing and won't even let us use keys to simulate other instruments, so we've had to get brass players in, string players in, a flautist etc, so you can imaging how picky he is with the vocals and I'm pleased to say that he's not once used autotune for Mrs Divas vocals.
As for Megan, yeah, she's ok, but forgettable, she'd make a good backing vocalist, but that's it. Our drummer does BVs and is way identifiable more than Megan
BTW, slightly OT, we've got a massive thunderstorm here (S.E. Lancs)
Thank you for your detailed reply. It made me have a proper listen to the track with some decent headphones! Yes I concede I can hear what you mean. I must be so used to hearing this type of vocal sound. That I didn't notice it being out of the norm! Also a lot of young singers now emulate the urban Tpain sound heard on many recordings!! But surely the singer must be able to sing in tune for this type of effect to be used. Otherwise it would emphasise a wrong note! Autotune used in the way it is meant to be, is to correct the pitch of a bad singer!
Because this girl uses the effect as an enhancement doesn't make her a bad singer. Anymore than a rock n roll singer using an echo box! Also as stated Cher uses the fx Autotune on parts of the Believe track. But I don't think that makes Cher a bad singer ;-) I think some people love to criticise for the sake of it!! Thanks again for the feedback and good luck with your recordings
Mashitup, I'm glad the explanation was helpful. Those recordings are just live demos for work purposes, but thanks for wishing me luck all the same. I am not looking for fame,(not that it would make me cry or anything, mind you! ) I just love music, and have been lucky enough to have made a modestly successful career of it.
Callmediva, I hope things go well for you and Mrs Diva. I perform covers as a primary part of my "day job", but do also write and perform originals , though that I do mostly for the love of it at this point. It's great that you guys create your own music! It's also great that your wife doesn't use or need much in the way of effects.
That's the problem. She wouldn't get past judges houses.
