If the customers believed it to be a gun, then their use of force was reasonable.
I have absolutely no sympathy, for any armed robber, who suffers at the hands of his victims.
I would imagine it matters to the people who subdued him.
S'funny but I'm not keen on the steps our government has taken to ban replica guns.
I mean, regardless of the distress caused by the threat from a replica gun, nobody is actually going to be killed by it.
Conversely, now that replica guns are so difficult to get hold of, it seems more likely that criminals may use real guns which can actually harm people.

Do you seriously think real guns are easier to get hold of than replica guns??
Ok, admittedly there are some hoops to jump through to get a black version (e.g. be a member of United Kingdom Airsoft Retailers Association) but you can acquire a blue version simply by buying online and if you so wanted could most likely paint it black.
I'm struggling to find an online retailer of genuine firearms

I suspect that criminals don't obtain guns from online retailers.
Thing is, amongst gangs and whatnot a gun isn't just for committing crimes. It's a status symbol too.
Back when any yahoo could buy a pretty realistic blank-firer for £70-odd, I suspect a lot of people would have been happy with that whereas, now it's difficult to get hold of anything properly realistic (as in made of metal, goes bang and doesn't reveal orange paint if you scratch off the coat of black spray-paint) I wouldn't be surprised if more people are locating real firearms to fulfill the role of status symbol.

Does it matter.

I don't think they intended to suffocate him.
And your evidence of that is?
No, the death penalty for killing people is how it should be.
It is if it was an accident.
Perhaps you should consider the definition of accident?
Unarmed
I understood he had a gun?
BB... pointless questions, the person you ask is no longer able to answer them!
He did and not for the first time either.
Do we know there was an assault, sustained or otherwise?
Seriously fella, ain't worth the finger effort. Ee's well gone!!
Don't listen him, Bob. Keep at it, you're on a roll
Isn't that right, P2O?
The police have already said it was a replica, though nobody would ever know just from looking at it.
Only in the most serious of cases, and it's not possible now because of the Council of Europe, except during a war.
... and only 34 pages to go in order to catch up.

30 seconds Googling turned up this: http://www.justbbguns.co.uk/

So, at the time, they believed it to be real?
