That perhaps was the story of Brookside itself. The houses were new at the time but the characters were often working class who had moved up the social ladder just a little.
Or down it slightly like the Collins family who were utterly horrified to be forced into a primarily working class environment, banished from their large characterful detached on The Wirral, thanks to the father being made redundant.
Google Streetview has updated recently with new images of the original residential side of Brookside Close. You can also see a new house being built where the security office was:
Recently the security office at the entrance to the Close has been demolished and is due to be replaced by a new house, not sure if that has been built yet. But all the other houses are the originals from when the close was built.
The new house is now built. You can live there for £675/month!

Unfortunately Google didn't go through to the other half of Brookside Close, perhaps they still believe it's private land.

It is isnt it? Its barriered off
It's a public street now and the barrier was removed several years back.
The new house is where the security office/barrier used to be.
There was a barrier/security office with 24 hour guards at the entrance.

That picture is from 2007 after they got rid of the security staff so anyone could just walk round the barrier in to the Close.
