That was brilliant, they should definitely turn it into a series.

we do the bits we want to do, very selective. since having kids we're making more of an effort like we keep to some of the festival customs like give up bread for passover, fasting at yom kippur, and candle lighting at hannuka. nothing too strenuous :D we're not encouraging the kids to eat pig, but i can't resist the odd bacon sanger.

Blimey. Thats more than we do :o

I really enjoyed that, probably not an accurate reflection but always good to have an insight and I hope ITV decide to make a full series out of it at some point. I grew up in that area (live far away from there now) yet I never had any long term correspondence with any Jewish people. Things like this always make me wonder what is going on so close yet you have no idea about.

So where did the thing about pigs come from? Isn't it to do with they don't have cloven hooves and chew their cud? (Sorry if I've got that wrong :o)

nothing goes on really other than leading a full time jewish life. they're too busy being jewish to do other things. us naughty jews get frowned on by the ultras big time.

i live in a fairly jewish community, but its nothing like this - i'd say 40% of my pals and people i'm in touch with are not jewish - these guys make better tv.

Can a jew marry a non jew?

of course, but religion only follows the maternal line.
Men marrying non-Jewish women are more discouraged than women marrying non-Jewish men because of the maternal line that the religion follows.

It follows the maternal line in Orthodox Judaism however in Reform Judaism it can follow either the maternal or paternal line. Israeli citizenship is available for anyone with one Jewish parent. Also, Karaite Jews follow the patriarchal line of descent only, but that's a whole other can of worms

thats most of us. totally normal secular brits, none of this light-switching crap and crazy food laws.

Pretty much, although I requested Kosher food when I was in hospital, mainly cos it's delivered from a specialist supplier in a sealed tray and not the hideous slop you normally get in hospital.:D

I loved the old bloke, my Grandad came from Poland as a young man in the 30's, would have loved to meet him.

Interesting programme and some big characters but I hope viewers realise that these are Orthodox Jews and very extreme unlike the majority of Jews

    Very interesting show.

    Bernette was a real character.

He was there. His name was Joel and he had a beard bigger than even the most Orthodox Jew could imagine.

When I was young I wanted to be Jewish, its always fascinated me so this was really interesting. I wouldn't be able to cope with all the restrictions and the Mitvah would make me feel unclean, which is the opposite of how Bernette is

You can be Jewish without having to cope with the above. PLEASE remember these are Orthodox. There are many Jews that don't have these restrictions. Liberal Jews are much more........ Liberal;)

That's why it needs to be a series so we can see the other side of things.

I felt this show was so much better than Gypsy Wedding, that show always felt a bit condescending towards the Gypsies.

I love the old man who was in Buchenwald.

The woman is very funny. If they´re not allowed to switch the kettle on, what about the lights?

No, you cannot switch the lights on and off on Friday night and Saturday, you will have to keep them on all the time - that is for the ceiling lights, as for Lamps there are on a timer
    - by the way I am Jewish as well, so I know

I think so, maybe just edging into Prestwich.

Mon Amie clothes shop is on Bury Old Road, just about in Prestwich. The Jewish community in Manchester mostly covers areas such as Prestwich, Whitefield, Sedgley Park, Crumpsall and Higher Brougton. So Salford and Bury council areas.

Very much so. I went to Philips High School in Whitefield, a lot of my school friends were Jewish and were not Orthodox (they wouldn't have gone to a state school if they were).

I loved this programme - and I love Jewish people! They manage to be respectful of their religion yet still have a great time.

Joel was lovely - and I was a bit shocked to see he had a wife and kids!

Jack was a delight - and had such a beautiful home.

Agree about Joel... I knew someone that worked with him and she was pretty certain he was not straight, despite the wife and kids... ;)
