James Payne- Tonight's writer talks about Who Killed Lucy story & more

How did you become a writer for EastEnders? What was your journey as a writer before then?

I've had two stints on EastEnders. One from 2002-2009; and one from last year until now. This time around the process involved Dominic (Treadwell-Collins, EastEnders Executive Producer) asking me to write a couple of episodes (Lucy Beale's death aftermath in April) which I couldn't turn down as the material was so powerful.

Originally though I became a writer on EastEnders by not taking no for an answer. I grew up in East London. EastEnders was my dream job. I wrote letters, phoned people randomly, tapped up tenuous contacts, begged and pleaded basically. I was turned down three times. Eventually I managed to land a spot on a shadow scheme EastEnders were running. They liked my work and I was offered a commission. I grabbed the chance and never looked back.

Before EastEnders I had a couple of years on Hollyoaks. I learned a lot up in Liverpool from the great Phil Redmond. Experience of the writers' room, understanding story and working swiftly across multiple drafts stood me in good stead for the tornado of EastEnders.

Before Hollyoaks the road was long and wind-y. I signed on for three years, writing all kinds of things - Radio, comedy sketches, stand-up material - most of which never saw the light of day. While it felt at the time as if I was banging my head against a brick wall in hindsight I realise that bit by bit, contact by contact, script by script, progress was being made.

When did you find out you were going to be writing the live episode and what was your reaction?

I was asked last year. I felt honoured and jammy.

What has it felt like being privy to a secret that has reportedly resulted in over £10 million of bets – the murderer of Lucy Beale?

Keeping secrets is part of the job. This one has been bigger than most. While people have certainly tried to get the identity of Lucy's killer out of me I've found it pretty easy to say nothing. Spilling the beans could necessitate a rewrite on the live episode and that's something I really don't fancy doing!

What are the particular challenges of writing a live episode, do you have to change anything? What makes it special?

Logistics are the primary challenge. The lot and the studios are physically in different places. So you have to allow time in the script for actors to move from one place to another.

What makes it special is the one-shot nature of it. There's a frisson of danger. Things can go wrong. But it can also bring a real energy to performances. My hope is that audiences will feel they are really there in the moment with characters they love and know. Being live can amplify that feeling.

How do you plan and storyline such a long running plot strand? What is the process?

This is one probably best answered by Alex Lamb (Story Producer), the architect of the 'who killed Lucy' story. I'm pretty sure this devilish whodunit has been germinating in his mind for years. With long running stories, the challenge is finding the twists and turns to keep it interesting. I think this story has had loads. I loved Emma Summerhayes cracking the case and then getting run over for example.

How does it work being part of a team of writers on EastEnders?

The primary job is to take the episodes you've been given and make them sing.

Beyond scripting, you can be invited to contribute to the story process either at monthly meetings or long term meetings. I love story meetings. I'm never happier than when sitting in a room with other writers, talking nonsense. And when that idea comes out of someone's mouth that silences the room it's a great feeling.

Did you have to write lots of alternative versions? How many drafts did you go through?

No alternate drafts. It was slightly unusual in the sense that part of the episode wasn't storylined in the traditional sense. I did have a whispered meeting with Alex Lamb, Sharon Batten (EastEnders Senior Producr) and Manpreet Dosanjh (Script Producer). Off the back of that I knew exactly what I was going to write. Even though there was a lot of scrutiny on the script it was relatively straightforward - 4 drafts I think.

How do you tackle writing about such emotive topics as murder and grief?

Grief is universal. We'll all feel it at some point in our lives. Honestly, I just wade into it and see what happens.

Why do you think Continuing Dramas like EastEnders are important for writers?

What you write gets made - That's the point of being a TV writer. Along the way you'll make mistakes of course but you'll learn how to collaborate and understand what it is that you want to say. You'll also get an understanding of the way TV works, the people in charge, who goes where.

What advice would you have for anyone trying to get into writing for TV

Work hard. Try not to be a d*ck. Seize your opportunities. Do your talking on the page.

    EastEnders; Backstage LIVE

    20:30 BBC One & 21:00 BBC Three

    60 minutes.
Zoe Ball goes backstage to meet the cast and crew as the live episode comes off air, getting instant reactions from the actors about their live performance. Joined by co-presenters Ore Oduba and former EastEnders star Joe Swash, Zoe also finds out how this week's anniversary episodes were put together, from the meticulous planning right through to the credits rolling - a task made doubly difficult by the umbrella of secrecy under which they have had to work. Plus, classic EastEnders moments from the past three decades, special guest appearances and other surprises.

Hope everyone enjoys the show. :)

I'm excited to see how they follow-up from this. Like I said yesterday, it could be a good killer choice after all. There's many ways they can go about playing it out.

I too am wondering how Ian will react to Jane telling him it's a Bobby.

I wouldn't be surprised to see it get more tonight, or equally as much. The choice of the killer divided opinion a lot, but I think everyone is intrigued to see how the Aftermath will play out.

Well. I'm sure torn in Bobby being te killer.

DTC should have stocked with his guns making Jane or Cindy the killer..

Will be interesting to see the aftermath tonight and will the unanswered questions get answered like Lauren and Emma figuring it out? Did Jane get help in bringing Lucy to the Common!

Tonights episode will be exclusively live only on BBC One.

It will star Adam Woodyatt, Laurie Brett and Eliot Carrington with small scenes from other cast members.

Agreed, I really didn't think they would go there. It could be a monumental mistake. Elliot hasn't even been in the role 3 months. He wasn't even an official suspect and many feel short changed.

Thanks 0...0. :) Mimi would have been amazing in the aftermath. Shakes fist at Alex Lamb. :D
QOTD: What is the point of baby Beth?

    @dominictc

#EELive tonight at 2000hrs. Bobby killed Lucy. But there is so much more to the story....

I still can't believe it was Bobby, surely someone else was involved as he looks really small compared to Lucy, maybe he walked in on a fight between Lucy and someone else and Lucy was winning so he crowned her to save the other person, maybe Cindy?

On Feb 20 2006: Gavin's sister calls Ian to say that Gavin and Kathy have been in an accident - a 13-year-old boy who was joyriding, crashed into their car, supposedly killing Kathy.

Good luck to the cast tonight - I'm sure it'll be amazing. Not going to be able to watch it live but can't wait to catch-up - it's been a great week!

Thanks for the excellently detailed thread to conclude the live week dullagj2, I actually think Bobby Beale being Lucy's killer was a great twist, it's more realistic than let's say it being 'Les Coker' as siblings do fight in the common household and family but unfortunately Bobby's attack was killing blow to Lucy's head. Even though Bobby was played by Rory Stroud at the time of the killing I think Eliot Carrington was better for playing the killer and was able to cope with the pressures of the live scene and he delivered the concluding line brilliantly! It will be interesting to see the continuation of last night's scene and find out who was involved in moving Lucy's body to the common, seeing if Dean is alive or dead and if Mick killed him, Dot's time in a prison cell, Ronnie waking up and her involvement with Richard Blackwood's character 'Vincent', Kim's newborn baby and of course the return of Kathy Beale! I'm guessing Max helped Jane move Lucy's body to the common to protect Abi and Bobby as why would Emma have said to Max 'You Know' so Jane must have told her in the park about his part in the murder? I was hoping that there would be more than one surprise return but there may still we'll be one tonight in the fully live episode, I look forward to it!

    Cheers User747. :)

I chose some of the less obvious clips for the video section because we have all seen the classic clips a billion times at this stage. I tried to include as many great characters as possible and show that EastEnders DOES do humour.

Why? How would that be exciting for the viewer? Half the time she's an outcast as far as Ian is concerned because she's not his biological daughter - all that would happen would be that he'd cast her out of the Beale family for good this time. Although last night I thought that it was disappointing for Bobby to be the killer, I can see that it has a lot of dramatic potential now - certainly far more than for it to be Cindy.

This is the other thing I can't understand. Why do people think an 11 year old boy couldn't have killed her just 'cause she's a girl of about 20? I assume she was in a sitting position when she was struck on the head - also maybe he came at her partially from behind. She would certainly not be expecting it at any rate. Also 11 year olds boys aren't THAT weak; they're nearly secondary school age - we're not talking about a 4 year old here. Moreover Lucy was a very slight girl - probably was only about 7 stone or even less than that - the actress looks very unhealthy. It's not as if an 18 stone rugby player was the victim.

It feels like people forget that Cindy is a kid herself. Whoever the killer was, pushing for a conviction for them isn't going to bring Lucy back, so why ruin a kid's life by sending them to prison/a young offenders institute? I believe that's the main reason for Jane covering for Bobby. After all, he's not her biological son. The idea of the Beales covering for Cindy is a lot less far fetched than some on here make it out to be.

Plus, Cindy has a kid of her own. Would you send the mother of a baby girl to prison? There's no obvious place for Beth to stay, so you give her a crappy start in life being shunted from pillar to post. Ian talked to Martin about having a normal childhood last night, but he's also seen what consequences a crap childhood can have in the form of Ben. There would have been a few moral dilemmas for Ian to mull over before he decided whether to hand Cindy in or not.

Excellent thread, I was initially sceptical about Bobby being the killer but now I think the follow up is going to be played and portrayed convincingly and can't wait for tonight to see what direction they're going to go. I really don't want Jane to take the flack for Bobby all the way until jail and hope that she confesses to Ian the genuine truth about what happened the night Lucy died
