Piracy is at epic levels, the world economy is in meltdown. Shops are closing all over the country and people are losing their jobs. So something needs to be done to stop these criminals constantly stealing off the internet. Worse still is many on this thread are bragging that they enjoy taking things without paying for them.
You REALLY haven't read this thread properly have you?
Piracy is at epic levels, the world economy is in meltdown. Shops are closing all over the country and everyday normal people are losing their jobs. So something needs to be done to stop these criminals constantly stealing off the internet. Worse still is many on this thread are bragging that they enjoy taking things without paying for them.
eh?.
How did pirates cause the banks to fail?, or Woolworths?, Or MFI? or any other shop?.
My son? This isn't the pub at closing time or a boxing match, such jingoism is just bluster.
You have no moral argument at all if you're prepared to punish innocent people. You're naive if you think the DEB is written to exclude that possibility.

Stupid comment it really is.
It's simple, millions of people now think its ok to take things for free off the internet rather than paying money for them.
They no longer bother to buy things from shops and instead just simply steal it off the internet for free.
Consequently all shops are closing down, how can they compete with FREE.
So businesses can't pay banks back as they don't have money coming in. It all has a knock on effect that threatens all our jobs, even if you're only on minimum wage. Your job is in danger unless new strong laws come in to stop this free for all.
I used bittorrent to download a sack of spuds last night.
This is one saving grace that no one has yet invented a way to download food. Else we all really would be done for. As you could guarantee these pirates would not pay for food either.
Anything that can be downloaded is totally f*cked as far a businesses go. Unless new laws can save the day.

You're using hyperbole. Calm down and explain why you think it's better to put profit before people, as you seem to be in favour of passing the DEB without a proper informed public debate.
Poor argument, Murder, Rape, Burglary, drug dealers and most crimes will never be stopped. But you should still make them illegal and send people caught for these crimes to jail.
Same with piracy, if people started getting regularly prosecuted for this taking without paying then it would cut piracy down tremendously compared to how bad it is now.
Something drastic needs to be done, and the sooner the better before everyone is out of work.

You're still dodging the question of people versus profits.
Would you prosecute innocent people to cut down piracy? or rape? or murder?
If so, then for shame, if not, why do you believe the DEB can't be abused thusly?

Poor analogy. Making Murder, Rape and drug dealing illegal reduces them from occuring. That's why we send people to prison. Punishing Murderers and rapists by cutting off their power supply doesn't stop them that's why we don't do it.

No it wouldn't. France have allready done so and seen an increase in copyright violation.
Something drastic needs to be done, and the sooner the better before everyone is out of work.
And that drastic thing is changing the business model - and we don't just mean finding other ways to charge us for the same content - but instead find another model.

Technoguy doesn't seem to want to discuss anything that goes against his way of thinking. He is fixated on ONE aspect of a highly COMPLEX and ENCOMPASSING bill.
Consequently all shops are closing down, how can they compete with FREE.
Can you name the stores that have shut down. Just curious.
If it's music related then you find that yes people do download for free, but many people buy from Itunes etc etc.
If it's video games then you have digital distribution growing such as Steam and you have many, many shops such as Game and others that have about 2 or 3 stores within a mile radius.
You can also account fot online shopping such as Amazon, Hut and Play.com - most of the time they have very low prices compared to known brand stores.
I can get a PS3 game cheaper online than I can from a high street store.
And that drastic thing is changing the business model - and we don't just mean finding other ways to charge us for the same content - but instead find another model.
Sounds simple when you say it like that, just find a new business model.
No business model can work long term when someone else is just giving the same thing away full uncut and without adverts or anything else you may have used to make money with and they are just giving it away for free. The ONLY way to seriously save the future world economy is to have strong laws to clamp down on these people who are taking things for free.
Well its a nonsensical question isn't as if they are found innocent then they won't be prosecuted. But thats up to the courts to decide, not me.

Unless I'm missing something here, why don't they just make the security active through their Wi-Fi connection? Perhaps this new £70 router will have security enabled by default?

Because the security can be cracked. So, someone hacks into your 'net connection through your security-enabled router and it's STILL your fault ..........
EA Sports released Command and Conquer Tiberian Sun for free not so long ago - all be it it's around ten years old - it's very fun and good game to play. It's made me NOT go out and buy Command and Conquer's more recent rival - Supereme Commander series.
Regards software it's great to see open sourced software get better and better as the years and months go on. It's certainly stopped me from paying for various software - get a free and legal alternative.

The scary bit is that if we are to believe 'piracy' is committed by hardcore criminals, then they will have the wherewithall and the incentive to 'frame' innocent people with even the latest consumer kit, properly configured for security.
Ambulance chasing lawyers are the other threat, they work on the guilty until proven innocent premise, you are effectively blackmailed.
Unfortunately, without the 70 quid router, your defence isn't watertight, you're screwed. The least the industry could do is pay for the kit out of the squillions they'll allegedly 'save'. As if.
I'm so confused about these new laws, I don't know much about this subject! What exactly will we not be able to do?? Does streaming films off the internet count as downloading them? Will I get a letter in the post if I use Limewire? Or is it only using torrent sites???

Are those spuds used for Mcains micro chips?

Man, you're a bundle of laughs!
You've shot yourself in the foot. The DEB assumes guilty until proven innocent, and the disconnection procedure doesn't involve courts. Do keep up.

Fair comment, loose language on my part. I meant punish, not prosecute.
