Why the fashion for giving boy babies shortened names?

It does seem to be quite fashionable nowadays. In the current top 100 UK boys names we have: Jack, Charlie, Archie, Joe, Sam, Freddy, Josh. Zac, Louie. What's wrong with giving the baby the full name; you've always got the option of shortening it in everyday use and the poor child won't have to spend the rest of his life explaining, "No, that's my name, it's not short for anything."

I think its probably because people find the nicknames cute but the full name not so much.
Jack used to be short for John but now it is a name in its own right.
I know it's used as a diminutive form of John.
Its not very short then is it? Still has the same amount of letters!
Ocean, Autumn lol. What drugs were being taken at the time they came up with these.
I would imagine in 70 odd years time, they'll be seen as old fashioned, in the same way that names such as Ethel and Walter are seen as old fashioned today.

Those kind of names REALLY annoy me.
Just think of the poor kid - wide open for bullying
I like it, and I also like Archie.
Lets be honest, calling a baby "Archibald" or "Alfred" would sound a bit silly.
As is Archie, also popular amongst the Boden mums.

i hate my name always wish i'd been something exotic like "carmen" lol.. but no i got boring old Lisa.
that made me lol, shes a brand designer works for Calvin Klein lives in NYc in a loft with her broker husband i doubt she even knows how to turn a kettle on let alone spell Boden but apparently theres a trend in nyc for english sounding old school names a rush of alfies archies daisys and mabels apparently
Associated almost exclusively with chavs.
Surprised no one called their kids Rockport(ford), Nike, Kickers, Ben Sherman....lol
Archie and Alfie are horrible names.
I also hate the current trend of 'Olive', as in Oliver/Olivia
I don't mind my name now but I hated it when I was young. I insisted on being called the shortened form, Sam.
