Why the fashion for giving boy babies shortened names?

It does seem to be quite fashionable nowadays. In the current top 100 UK boys names we have: Jack, Charlie, Archie, Joe, Sam, Freddy, Josh. Zac, Louie. What's wrong with giving the baby the full name; you've always got the option of shortening it in everyday use and the poor child won't have to spend the rest of his life explaining, "No, that's my name, it's not short for anything."

    What is jack short for?

I think its probably because people find the nicknames cute but the full name not so much.

Jack used to be short for John but now it is a name in its own right.

I know it's used as a diminutive form of John.

My cousin named her little boy Ben. Not Benjamin, but Ben. I find it a little odd, but each to their own I guess.

I only used the word shortened because my memory is failing in giving me the word I really need. :) Something like nickname, or familiar name. Come on, somebody must know the word I mean!

I would imagine in 70 odd years time, they'll be seen as old fashioned, in the same way that names such as Ethel and Walter are seen as old fashioned today. :p

Louis has class. Louie sounds like some two bit American gangster from the 30s. :)

Those with the full names will end up with them being shortened in the playground anyway so maybe the parents are effectively cutting out the 'middle man'?

Those kind of names REALLY annoy me.

I like it, and I also like Archie.

Lets be honest, calling a baby "Archibald" or "Alfred" would sound a bit silly.

Archie and Alfie are horrible names.

I also hate the current trend of 'Olive', as in Oliver/Olivia

I like the name Lisa. My step-daughter was called Lisa. Carmen makes me think of hookers! :o

I don't mind my name now but I hated it when I was young. I insisted on being called the shortened form, Sam.
