I'm always fascinated by the story of the construction of the Clifton Suspension Bridge.

They slung a wire across the gorge and had a basket on it with a man in it. I get giddy on the third step of a ladder!

They probably still had scaffolding back then and just worked their way up.

Yes - if you search YouTube you can find some old footage which shows its construction.

I was thinking that, but then, was the scaffolding strong enough to lift all that heavy stone to that height ?

No Health and Safety. When I went to see the Damn wall seperating Zimbabwe from Zambia I was told that a lot of bodies were still in the wall from when they died building it.
