Cue a load of people who previously thought the octa-core was the best thing ever, now saying it doesn't matter.
Yup, I bet if its $500 sim free in the US for the Octo core you know it will be £500 in the UK for the quad, ripoff I cannot believe Samsung have dumped on the UK like this.

I can because like Apple, Samsung have its fanboys who will always stay loyal to the brand and they know the unit will sell because of silly gimmicks or features like air gestures. I mean what benefit does that add to a phone that other models without it can't do?
Going quad core maybe to do with limitations with the 4g network but really is that a reason not to offer it to the UK. A fix would probably sort that at some point anyway and its not as if 4G is the main selling point when its still some months off before its available everywhere and even then I can't see it being massively popular due to the price as its going to be quite expensive at first just like 3G was, not to mention teething problems with network coverage only reaching around 60% of the country at first before its finally available everywhere, which won't be until 2016 according to some!

Have they said which countries will get the octicore? I assume it isn't any 4g countries.
Did anybody watch that funny presentation when Samsung had announced S4? Did they mention that there would be different hardware versions available? I only checked DS articles and they only mention octocore. It would be also nice if they mentioned what is the limitation that prevents using it in 4G models. This could be if everything is on one chip and with 4G there's not enough space for more cores. Or they do not have enough octocores to use? Will US get 4G version only? Is octocore only for developing countries?
Well, the quad one is another smoke and daggers chip.
It isn't A15 but probably adds the divide in hardware to the A9 type CPU it looks to be using.
Obviously all done to give it an individual identity rather than cut costs. Long term it is interesting as they could simply switch to MIPS or Intel in their design.
A15's are naturally faster but this is halfway house SOC. I guess the extra Mhz makes it match the A15 with middling power consumption.
I'm confused. Are you saying the octo-core powered S4 will be available in the UK but without LTE?
No. Sorry for the confusion. Samsung have made two versions of the S4. The only one available in the UK (at launch time) will be the S4 quad-core with 4G. If you live in South Korea, the only one available (at launch) will be the octo-core with no 4G support.
This isnt to say, once they have figured out the technical problems, that the octo-core with 4G support wont be available in the UK...then again they may only offer that in the S5.
What does amuse me though, how people were putting so much blind faith in Samsung, thinking they were going to get something truly next gen. Then came the launch, and we saw a lot of gimmicky features. Now comes the octo coreless S4s for the western world.
People were holding up the fictitious S4 as being a big brutish destroyer of a phone, but in reality, is not so much of a step up. Yes it brings a few nice features but nothing which makes it stand head and shoulders above other offerings.
It's a good upgrade over the S3, but is it something mind blowingly new and amazing? No, it isn't. Very good phone, but doesn't match the pre release hype that generated.
As much as the news of the lack of octo power amuses me I don't think this will have any impact on the sales of the S4. It is still the new Galaxy and may who don't want an iPhone will go automatically to this. It's a pity they can't see beyond the Samsung Juggernaught of marketing.
Has it been announced which quad the S4 is using? Is ithe Snapdragon 600?

I believe it is the snap 600, same as in the HTC One, but clocked faster, @1.9ghz. Wondering if the extra clockspeed would put a strain on battery lifeI'm , not to mention a now heavily bloated touch wiz. Raw performance and a barrel load of baked in features is one thing, but all that will require a barrel load of fuel too, so remains to be seen how energy efficient the S4 will be.
I know I am contradicting myself from earlier posts where I said that the quad core S4 will still perform well but then again factoring in the battery situation, I have revised my opinion some what. At least the battery is replaceable so a good idea to carry a spare.
I imagine the UK version will bench something similar. Also worth noting, Both Nexus 4 and S4 sport 2gb of ram and have Adreno 320 GPU. The Samsung octa has the Power VR SGX 544mp chip which I am guessing it better?
If we want to talk value, the Nexus 4 coming in at £239/279 unlocked as opposed to £500+ UK Spec S4, I think we can safely say given the spec sheet, that the Nexus 4 on a price to performance ratio is the better option. Then you get pure Android and instant updates. If you really weigh it all up, Nexus 4 is pretty much a fantastic deal right now. Unless you really really need more than 16gb of storage space.
I'd suggest that the Snapdragon 600 CPU side of things is like having 3 IPhone 5s.
As said its a similar compromise(non A15) design but still fast.
Just maybe the choice it was all about how it gets 4G though I think delay.
Hey, they might have even done a deal with Apple to let them have it for the iPhone 6/5s, thus not competing in the main Apple markets. (methinks Samsung will swap out the 544 for the 543 if so)

His and hers 16gb Nexus 4s won't come to much more than the bill for one S4. Which surely puts it all into some sort of perspective?

To be fair comparing the Nexus4 with any other phone in terms of price is not really fair. We all know the N4 is worth a hell of a lot more than the price Google have charged. Google will make money of the ads, rather than the hardware side of things. Whilst other manufacturers (Samsung, HTC, sony etc) only have the hardware side of things to make their money.
Having said that, fair play to google for shaking the market up a bit.
........... most likely to make sure there won’t be any supply shortages, Samsung will be launching the Qualcomm version in many countries outside America.............
[however] France, Germany, Italy, Poland, UK, Hong Kong, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are slated to get both versions of the Samsung Galaxy S4.......
Firstly, the lists are not exhaustive or set in stone. In fact, I would advise you to take it all with a pinch of salt, as the info is based on a check of existing test firmwares, so it could be fully reliable or… not so much........
Finally, before you start complaining about not being able to grab an Exynos-based GS4 in many countries, try to keep in mind that we’re yet to find out which of the two versions will be zippier. Moreover, the first benchmark results for the Snapdragon model are extremely impressive.
Also, there’s the whole battery debate, with some claiming the Exynos 5 Octa CPU will in fact drain more juice faster than the Snapdragon.
I can't imagine they'll want to offer two, fairly similar variants to customers and have two versions next to each other on the shelves, (and most customers won't care) so it seems more a case of having to ask to get the version you want. And if the speculation is correct, its all about getting as many phones into peoples hands as quickly as possible.

Yes and by Samsung themselves.

If so, then its a personal preference. I know when the S3 was released some people were upset that the phone didnt come with 4G capability.
For those looking to get the S4, I dont see how this news makes much difference.
There was a 4G LTE version of the Galaxy S3 when it was released. There was even a 4G LTE version of the S2!
The UK networks decided not to stock the 4G version until they got some 4G spectrum to use. So it was a purely commercial decision.

I'm confused. Are you saying the octo-core powered S4 will be available in the UK but without LTE?
No, that's just available options produced by Samsung. Based on the information available at the moment only 4G version will be sold in UK.

So, contrary to what ACU intimated, there is no personal preference involved if you happen to live in the UK and want an S4...
Dont forget though the S4 will be made out of laminated crisp packets if the S3 is anything to go by, that has to be worth something.
See above, the "you" did not mean "you in UK"
