As for EastEnders, the ratings pattern is concerning. The fact that 2 million more viewers watched Coronation Street, and didn't bother to flick to EastEnders in between the Corrie sandwich speaks volumes. The two soaps used to be a lot closer in the figures on a Monday. I think EastEnders is going to struggle a lot this summer.

Well, one of the two anyway.
Anyone got a programme by programme breakdown of each channel from yesterday?
Just couldn't leave it could you
EastEnders might get stronger and then it will be a case of People defending Corrie's ratings ;like they were in 2007/2008/2009.

I agree, there won't be the BBC Two move to excuse any potential low ratings, I read the post from Jaycee Dove and I have to say no post has ever summed up the situation better regarding the soaps especially the mess EE finds its self in, if people are offered a production with quality plots and production values then they will watch. But the drop of in ratings does show there is a huge underlying problem with the show and giving a junior team member the reigns who was part of the problem was a big mistake.
I also watch Holby and I have noticed it goes through lulls which are reflected in the ratings but as a viewer I know it does improve after a few weeks, with EE there seems no end in sight.
Yesterday I said Kirkwood was a bad EP, but if the team surrounding him is lacklustre and bereft of ideas and I'm beginning to suspect he had llittle or no support from his superiors either so should he really be blamed 100% for the ratings disaster it is becoming?
I think it's time for something major to be done now because it now got to the point where it's stupid. Trouble is it's going to take so long to get back these viewers. I gave Lorraine a chance but she needed to but she hasn't done enough. They need fresh blood that actually understands the soap.
But the writing need's to improve badly. I agree. it going to have a bad summer and it has no BBC two to hide behind this time.
If this continues then it's game over.

The ratings for EE & Corrie all year so far would look good in a graph, had anyone got the data to do this?
Broadchurch continues to do well. BBC1's scheduling against it is interesting, obviously trying to kill it off by drama in the first two weeks, hoping now that it'd be already dead by the time they rolled out the Motorway Cops. On this occasion they failed.
I get the feeling the whole team is totally useless. And Newman is one of them.
They need a total clear out and reshuffle.
And yes these ratings would look great in a graph. A graph of the last 10 years is what is really needed. Change the soap now so that it's ready in time for Christmas and they can work off the little bounce they "normally" get.
They then need to string some good stories together that are GRIPING and promote the hell out of the bastard. This show is going down like the titanic.
PEG THE HOLES BBC! PEG THE HOLES!!!!!
Ken
I don't think he can be blamed entirely, the problems at EastEnders seem to be deep rooted and go beyond the producer. Kirkwood has successfully turned Hollyoaks around since rejoining last September. Meanwhile nothing has improved at EastEnders and Lorraine Newman has been producer for a year. It has become extremely dull, with tired characters and no big plots. Time for a big revamp.
Could people finally be tiring of the endless doom and gloom and depressing scripts in EE? I know it's always had this, but EE has been an almost endless depressing show for years and now it seems to be falling behind its arch rival.
You are incredibly defensive of EastEnders. You make dan2008 look impartial.
When you look at last night's ratings (C4: 1.21m, E4: 788k) its a big improvement on what it has been getting over the last couple of years. C4 used to average aound 1.5m in BK's first era so there's still room for improvement, but the average E4 rating seems better than ever now.
I can't see either doing worse (relatively speaking) than BBC1's Motorway Cops last night.
Why don't they put their big hitters in better slots? Seems a waste, as I'm sure all three attract similar demos.
See below - dumped to a late-night slot. The two episodes at 22:00 got 822k/4.3% and 891k/4.65% inc +1, the second in line with the slot average, so I'm not sure why it deserved this treatment.
EDIT: It was billed in its new time in the Radio Times, so Channel 5 presumably made the decision to move it after the premiere's rating, not expecting the recovery for episode 2.
Channel 5 (exc/inc +1)
19:00 - The Gadget Show - Future Special: 563k (2.4%) / 660k (2.8%)
20:00 - World's Fastest Train (r): 1.09m (4.3%) / 1.20m (4.7%)
21:00 - Robson's Extreme Fishing Challenge: 869k (3.6%) / 941k (3.85%)
22:00 - FILM: Road House (1989): 712k (5.8%) / 752.5k (6.1%)
24:20 - Bomb Patrol: 141k (3.7%) exc +1
Hollyoaks has undoubtedly made a lot of progress and turned a corner but the problem I continue to have with it is that E4 could probably fill that slot just as well a lot more cheaply with a sitcom repeat and likewise C4 could slot in another Simpsons or Come Dine and the ratings would be about the same if not better.
That said, it should be commended for rallying in the way that it has in recent months as that doesn't happen easily. Storylines must have rapidly improved and viewers have responded to that. But am I convinced even now that Channel 4 particularly need Hollyoaks? Absolutely not.
The King's Speech is sure to go well regardless of what is happening on the BBC and ITV. It's them that should be scared of losing viewers in this situation and not C4.
