One thing that some on here might not know about Margaret Thatcher; although she was instrumental at abolishing the student grant she made sure she had her bite at the cherry. I believe she had either three or four separate degrees funded by the public purse...

Before she went into politics she was employed by Unilever as a food scientist. It was she who discovered how to blow ice cream full of air, thereby enabling her employers to bilk the public by selling them half the amount of product for the same price. I always felt she carried that principle over into her public life, never realising that her true employers were the very public that she was fleecing...

They'll probably have a private funeral, a state one would turn into a mess.

There's talk of a" state funeral "that is not going to go down well with a lot of people.

Hopefully the faux socialists will give it a rest for the day and allow the moment to pass with dignity.
It would be nice if you and others practise what you preach, too, and resist the insults.

Huw Edwards is really laying into her on Radio 4 now - Europe, Hesaltine, Howe, people loathing her!!

Well, they have to be honesy about her, they can't pretend she was a brillaint PM, loved by all. because she did cause a lot of damage and has a lot of dislike against her. I'm sure some people would like her to be canonised, but inreality she is hugely divisive.

This is the first time a PM has died in my lifetime so not sure what or how it will be shown on the t.v.

One of our junior members, then? I'm sure it's less than 10 years or so since Callaghan and Heath died, and I think Wilson went in the mid-90s (he also had Alzheimers, so had been out of the public eye for a long time).

Are you under 8 years old?

    James Callahan died 2005
    Ted Heath died 2005

Yes I remember their State funerals so well.

Oh so there are different rules just for her?

    WHY?

I cheered when she resigned but it's always sad when someone dies.

As someone who strongly disagreed with her politics, I'm not ashamed to show some respect.

Already facebook and twitter is filled with comments from people who either were not alive during her time in office or were too young to be affected spouting how "happy" they are as if she had a massive negative effect on their own lives.

People still feel the things she did 30 years ago now

Couldn't stand the woman - hated her politics and all she stood for.
Can't say I am glad she is dead as I would not like to say that about anybody - but I am not weeping.

I really hope she is not given a state funeral.

She had expressed in the past that she didn't want a state funeral due to all the pomp and stuff that surrounds it.

A state funeral paid for out of my money?

Why? What about the people of this country that she drove into the mud. Are they just to be ignored and a state funeral pushed through no matter what?

    How Thatcherite!

How the hell would you know? You weren't even born when she became Prime Minister.

Giving Thatcher a state funeral was Gordon Brown's idea.

BBC already trashing her in their commentary about how divisive she was - she is barely cold.

It's called an obituary. They review her life, good and bad. There was plenty of both. It'd be a disgrace to make her out to be some kind of saint.

I won't pretend to be upset or even slightly moved by this news. She was an old, frail woman, she was going to at some point. She was hated by many, no one in my immediate family or circle of friends liked her or looked up to her. I grew up during the last few years of her Premiership. I remember someone on my street having a party when she was leaving number 10.

She divided the country in life, to pretend she wouldn't do so in death is just silly. Many people will be happy at this news and will show it publicly.

This is true. I couldn't stand the woman, but I'd think it was a bit off if they didn't have people praising her as well. She's famously divisive. It would be crap journalism not to hear both sides.

Exactly. It's this pathetic twitter left-wing brigade. My uni is filled to the brim with them; far too young to have lived then, but hate Thatcher nonetheless, simply because a) their mates hate them b) they think it's cool to follow their gimpy liberal mates.

    STATE FUNERAL FOR THATCHER!!!

A State Funeral for Mrs Thatcher is going to be a darn sight cheaper than paying Mick Philpott to annually father more children.

    Bollox.

The most destructive PM this Country has had.

I think I shall avoid the News programmes for the rest of the day - there will be nothing worthwhile on.

I give it a couple of hours before it gets like the death of Diana!
