England were far too sloppy at the back.

You can thank this disaster of a world cup to those idiots who called for the 'old guard' to be dropped in favour of these 'fresh young talents'. Absolute morons, and to think as well that they were going after Rooney's head as well. Gerrard has been rubbish as captain as well. We undoubtedly would've done much better with the likes of John Terry, Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard and Rio Ferdinand.

But you didn't do exceptional with them before

Because they're being fair? I was far more angry at our performances in 2010 than this year. This was an inexperienced and it was always going be a struggle.

They're not being fair, they're painting a completely unrepresentative picture of the match; you'd think England had 75% possession and three times as many chances as Uruguay and were beaten by two fluke goals completely against the run of play when we all know it was even at best.

As someone said earlier, why wasn't Gerrard called out for the way he was culpable in both of Suarez's goals?

Was there any proper analysis of the defensive shambles early in the second half?

Was there any proper criticism of the ease England lost possession and misplaced passes?

Make no mistake, England DID NOT lose tonight's match just because they were unlucky.

We reached the last 16 in that World Cup. And as poor as we were we had a decent defence until we were torn apart by a superior Germany. Italy and Uruguay weren't impressive at all and we lost to them both, this can't be dressed up as anything but failure.

We had a far stronger squad in 2010 yet managed to embarrass ourselves against Algeria and America and were humiliated by Germany.

We played reasonably well but didn't have enough about us. We suspected enough at the start of the tournament; we just don't have the players to choose from.

That's the thing with England they are ok, but they are not good enough against big teams

We have 0 points. Yes we can call it unlucky but there is only so long before we can just say it isn't working. Taking the World Cup friendlies into consideration we have 1 win. 2 draws. 2 loses.

We played just enough to keep up with Uruguay IMO they could have been 3 up in the first have and could easily had 2 at the beginning of the 2nd. If we had decent possession, looked a constant threat and maybe hit the post a few times I'd say hard luck England but crossing balls into the keeper for 70% of the game isn't giving a good go.

We looked like we thought we'd try to nick a draw from minute 1.

Didn't see the shirt, but saw the flag.

Probably still there from '78. There'll be a couple of bairns on the Irn Bru in Uruguay!

I agree with this (and I'm not even English.) They need more guile in midfield and more energy though. Hopefully for England's sake the likes of Wilshire and Chamberlain will be fit and ready for the next tournament and Barkley will progress well. That could be a decent trio in the centre of the park for the future.

At least we never lost our first two world cup games, at least we got out of the group stage before. And when we played Italy in euro 2012 with the old guard still more or less there, we at least didn't get beaten in regular time, it took penalties for them to beat us.

Gerard let us down. He needs to go. Stick him on Copacbana Beach until the plane is due to go home (whenever that may be). He should not be a starter in any England team anymore

    I guess that's it then.

As usual, time to look at the potential winners of the World Cup.

If Italy beat Costa Rica and Uruguay by only one goal England would only need to beat Costa Rica 2-0.

Highly unlikely, but you never know.

England lost the match because of individual errors and a certain person's class. I do agree to an extent; how Gerrard got away without criticism I'm not sure but the poor passing was touched upon and they must have thought blasting the defending for the goals was enough.

Both sides made mistakes at the back. Suarez took advantage; Rooney (as he headed against the bar and shot straight at the keeper when free) didn't manage to have quite the same impact.

A Few critics said before the tournament that our weak defence would be our udoing which has proved the case as at times it was shambolic ! and its a shame the good play in midfield and attack has been undermined by our defence ! who ever manages the team after the World Cup needs to sort the defence out as Johnson and Baines great attacking but weak tracking back and defending !

I think our biggest problems are 1. successive managers picking players cause of who they are/play for rather than form and 2. playing players out of position just to get them in the team rather than pick players used to that position.

so ... the ox would have marked Suarez?

That was the only real difference.

    Well yes :D

For me England should be on the plane now-there shouldn't be finger tips available to cling on with. Just don't deserve to progress and are not good enough.

And have never won. But we can rely on there always being a smug ***t to come in and gloat.

    It's pathetic. :D
    Bitter Jocks.
Same with that idiot Robbie Savage on the BBC.
Nothing good to say about England. Just a bitter Taffy.
