Here's a real obscurity from the 70s - Phoenix Five - an Aussie science fiction series. The special effects budget never seemed to get out of single figures :)

Instantly and forever after known as Penis Five at my school. Oh, how we laughed.

The Flying Doctors (with Peter O'Brien who played Shane Ramsay in the early years of Neighbours) & The Henderson Kids (with a pre-Neighbours Kylie Minogue)

I loved the theme tune to the Flying Doctors!

There really is a need for a children's TV section in the forum .

I remember Heartbreak High had such a diverse and multicultural cast, it was a real stark contrast to the all-white (well mostly) Neighbours.

John Howard, who played the villain Silverthorn in that and the sequel had a role as a villain in the new Mad Max film

I'm pretty sure that the police series Blue Heelers was on some ITV regions in the 90's as well

Yep. It was also shown in the Central Region as well, during the afternoon. The guy that plays Channing in Wentworth, was also in Blue Heelers. I think he played a detective.

Used to love Richmond Hill but it only lasted a year.

I remember this too. Interesting to see The Freak (PCBH), appear in Richmond Hill. She seemed more human. :D

Nobody has mentioned Special Squad A great tough gritty cop show from the 1980's. Mind you, a lot of people in the UK may well not have watched it as it was shown very late at night on some ITV regions. In my ITV region it was shown about 3:50am on Wednesday nights/Thursday mornings! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJWSuZon654

Kylie was in Neighbours between 1986 - 1988. How come she was in two shows at once?

Sorry my mistake. Fame and Misfortune was made in 1986 only and there was just one series. So Kylie was in that before joining Neighbours.

I don't remember half these shows, but as a side question, why haven't we had hours of Canadian TV or New Zealand to match the stuff from Australia.

One from New Zealand Shortland Street, don't know what channel it was on or for how long, I can only remember Dr Roputa(sp), same blokey from Once were warriors.

I used to watch it as well. The policeman's wife was also in PCBH. Played an inmate called Lorelei as I recall

Blue Heelers was also shown in the Anglia region as well in the same slot that was occupied by A Country Practice

I remember a couple of New Zealand shows

The Children of Fire Mountain https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Children_of_Fire_Mountain

    The Flying Kiwi

There's quite a funny comedy from NZ called Seven Periods with Mr Gormsby.

Canadian shows that I know have been shown over here

    The Beachcombers https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beachcombers
    The Odyssey https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Odyssey_%28TV_series%29
    Due South
    Slings and Arrows
    Rookie Blue
    Flashpoint
    Motive
    Murdoch Mysteries

Temura Morrison who played Dr Ropata also played Jango Fett, Boba Fett's father/clone donor in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones

I've just remembered another New Zealand show

    The Tribe https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tribe_%28TV_series%29

There's quite a bit of Canadian telly on the smaller digital channels - Bitchin' Kitchen on Food Network, Never Ever Do This at Home on Property Show, technically How It's Made on Quest, and most of PopGirl (Really Me, What's Up Warthogs, 6teen, How to be Indie...)

As for Aussie shows, here's an obscure one: Newlyweds. Nowt to do with Jessica Simpson, I'm talking about the early 90s relationship sitcom that fetched up on Life One for no immediately clear reason around the turn of the millennium. Lapped it up I did, but then I love sitcoms.

Shortland Street was shown in the Central Region from March 1993 to August 2003. For a number of years it was shown at 5.10pm, but it was edited by ITV.

It's interesting to see a much younger looking Danielle Cormack, who played nurse Alison Raynor, when looking back at early episodes from the 90's.
