" The children's commissioner for Wales says his office has received 38 calls since a child abuse victim in north Wales in the 70s and 80s spoke out. Keith Towler said some were from people wanting to make "fresh allegations", and he would welcome further calls."
Mr Messham may well have heard Sir McA and inferred Lord McA. The difference is not that obvious, especially if the McA was known to be very rich. So there may not be any deliberate deception, just confusion by someone who was young and hurt and not dealt with properly.
Personally, I had no idea there was more than one alpha male in the McAlpine construction company. It's taken me days to work out the family tree, especially given the repeating first names used within the family, and the multiple marriages and offspring that go with each McAlpine.
I wouldn't be surprised if a local policeman was not aware that the local McAlpine bigwig wasn't THE McAlpine of construction company fame, and assumed that he and Lord McAlpine of the Thatcher government were one and the same. After all, the Wrexham branch of the family were also in construction, as Sir Alfred McAlpine plc.
Before this week, I hadn't a clue what Lord (Alastair) McAlpine looked like. And I've lived through Heath, Wilson, Callaghan, Thatcher and the rest, and read broadsheets every day. So he's not a household face, by any means! Knowing what LAM does look like now, I'm struck by the fact that he looks fairly generic. I could easily mistake a photograph of someone else for him. And I imagine he has a generic public-school accent, and would just sound 'posh' to a young, working-class boy.
Entwistle being interviewed on 5Live this morning. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p010y864
He doesn't sound as clueless as in the Today interview, but clearly out of his depth.
He believed that the Newsnight editor should have total control with no "interference from management." This would usually be correct, and he didn't realise that this was an exception.
To be honest I think many of us would sound clueless if interviewed by John Humphriess on the 'Today' programme.
There is a good editorial in the Guardian highlighting the need for a more rational discussion of the problem of child abuse and a sensible plan of action rather than the current hysteria and witch hunts.
I do think that former Chief of C5 was spot on.(earlier on the news)
BBC has to get some order before Children in need.
At this rate they are just begging for the Goverment to come in and basically rip them apart and rebuild.
Thanks. So Keith Towler and The Independent both have a copy of the Jillings report. It seems like the insurers had way too much clout.
* The council did not allow the inquiry to place a notice in the local press seeking information. "This was considered to be unacceptable to the insurers,'' says the report.
Since when do insurance companies decide what's acceptable to put in the press when the subject is as serious as child abuse?
Got to feel for Entwhistle. Neither he, nor anyone else aspiring to the DG role, could have ever guessed that dealing with such a shitstorm, including legacy issues spanning four decades, was going to be part of the job.
Don't suppose in the interview they asked him: 'So, George, can you tell us how you would go about apologising for four decades of cover-ups at Auntie, when the shit hits the fan?"
I agree with what you have said.
Barely had he started in his role as D G than he was facing one of the worst crisis the BBC has had to deal with. Since then the pressure has been relentless and I'm not surprised he has resigned.
Does he? I'm not so sure. He looks to me like someone that's also under heavy manners. Very odd all this, a benchmark news programme peopled by senior, very experienced journalists, all suddenly behaving like headless chickens and acting as if they've only been in the job for 5 minutes with schoolboy errors at every turn.
Be interesting to know what's really going on behind the scenes because we're getting only a fraction of the real story imo.
Talking of headless chickens, Paxo's very quiet, perhaps he fears this could lead to long overdue transparency at aunties.
Someone neds to get the Report uploaded to Google Docs pronto before the remaining copies mysteriously disappear. Rod Richards said there was a copy at the Welsh Office too.

As David Cameron keeps saying abuse needs to be reported to police who we know are working closely with abuse charities. The police investigation has got to be of paramount importance as anything else runs the risk of undermining future criminal cases. Even with the Wales abuse there are new cases coming forward. They are going to have to be investigated by Police before going anywhere near an Inquiry. Press now need to pull back & stop trying to outdo each other with sensationalist stories.

Interesting if this is actually written anywhere or it is now convenient to blame the Insurers as they no longer exist. I find it flippin odd personally.
Edit - I see it is in the actual report. Interesting that Jillings was commissioned in 1994 but MM became insolvent in 1992. So any involvement would be with a basically bankrupt insurance company & whoever was being left to deal with the run off claims.
Hi - just popping in to say thanks so much for all the links and keeping us up-to-date. I can't stand watching it all on the news any more, so catch up on the thread every night.
"And the crisis deepened last night as it was claimed that the former director-general personally intervened to axe a Panorama investigation into two newspaper tycoons, which was due to be aired tomorrow.
According to well-placed BBC sources, Mr Entwistle ordered the programme on Daily Telegraph owners Sir Frederick and Sir David Barclay to be pulled as he believed it was ‘risky’ – but did not fully explain what he meant.
It will be replaced by a documentary about badgers."
Daily Mail investigates the credibility of Steven Messham, which is fair enough of course, but does it in an absurdly biased way so typical of the Daily Fail
Exactly right. He isn't a leader. BBC needs to put someone in who has performed at CEO level of a FTSE 100 company. There is great talent at BBC who need to be allowed to get on with their job. What needs to happen is that it must move to a media organisation fit for purpose in 21st century. A business perspective has to be put in place.
. Do leave off, someone on work experience, could do the basics of that job for the most part, the rest is just fannying around. And when thompson runs that yankee paper into the ground, I for one will not be surprised.

"We have received 190 calls directly relating to Jimmy Savile, which have been passed on to the police. In the four weeks since the allegations against Savile first surfaced, we have also had an additional 217 calls relating to other historical abuse. 91 of those have been referred to the police.
