Don't people need to care about the character though to care about the aftermath. Ian Beale has pretty much always been somewhat of a joke - even when the show was popular. I can't see a storyline centred around him pulling viewers back.
It's about the number of characters involved. Denise,Peter,Ian and Jane mostly (The Beale family and everyone close. Sharon,Phil and Dot play a huge part in the storyline too)
Ian Beale is a popular character. All he has to do is appear on screen and he's already trending on twitter.
Again this storyline will be running alongside others so it's not always going to be the main feature at bring viewers back.
'Even when' the show was popular (Sarcastic face) What a pathetic statement. The show is most watched at least twice a week and ends up topping the most watched shows on the BBC for much of the year.
I misread the figures I posted. There's no need to be rude.
He's always rude. Just stick him on ignore and ignore him - that's what I've done. No point in responding.
A shame that Catchphrase and Off Their Rockers aren't doing better this time round as they really deserve to. I'd love to have seen Off Their Rockers get the BGT lead in, as I do think it deserves some more attention.
Oh Catchphrase and Off Their Rockers. They really deserve better than that. The Crimson Field, Endeavour and Fargo hurt each other resulting in declines for the former two and a mediocre start for the third. Countryfile is rating higher than Emmerdale and Antiques Roadshow had a very good night.
Mediocre start for Fargo???
Please...
I'm sure Channel 4 are very pleased with its launch rating
I'm sure Channel 4 are very pleased with its launch rating
1.6m is hardly a steller rating for the broadcaster. But it would have been dragged down by the opposition so Channel 4 will probably be happy enough with it.
Once again one of the ratings of the year for BGT.
Hard to tell where it is going this year yet though, the first episode buoyed by an unusual situation and Saturdays depressed by Easter and weather maybe.
From acorns grow oaks with BGT, it started very slowly, some newspaper compared it to a talent contest from a third world country when it started, but now it's ITV's biggest hit and should logically run for years, same as IAC, the last of the ITV celebreality shows, defies the odds and can get over 10 million.
Although to be fair to De Vil, Coro hasnt had blanket promotion the last couple of days nor a massive storyline running right now. Youd expect EE to be less than 1million behind Coro tomorrow, in fact it should run Coro very close. This type of blanket promotion from the BBC is rare and doesnt come cheap, it should result in EE closing the gap on Coro.
I agree. My prediction for EastEnders is 7.96m, ie 8m but I'm sure people will call it a failure for not getting that extra 40k and not beating the 8.05m it got at the end of January for Timothy West's debut. Corrie should be ahead with mid-8's excluding +1.
Dan will undoubtedly make excuses if EE episode on Monday doesn't reach 8 million. Word of mouth(his favourite phrase) didn't help boost ratings when Johnny came out as gay to Mick and I don't see this marketing campaign making any difference.
The episode following Johnny coming out is the 2nd highest Monday rating this year, 7.9m and his coming out is the highest Friday rating this year, 7.72m. Hard to say it didn't receive a boost considering said episode wasn't even advertised. Word of mouth as dan would say. ;-)
Eastenders will be the number 1 show tonight, my sources show this, mark my words!
In seriousness, people who don't even like EE will be tuning in to see what the fuss is about, and there is a fuss, they are still airing trailers in every junction this morning and so far the announcer has promoted it over the ident in front of every programme. Whether they stick around for more than one or two episodes is the question.
I can't see it beating Corrie. Unfortunately, it faces the start of a Champions League semi-final tomorrow but hopefully it can hold firm in the mid-7's but it'll definetly drop. Tonight's will inevitably be the highest of the week but hopefully they can hold on to a good chunk. It's certainly got people talking about the show again.
That would take it through to 2027 then - and if history repeats itself SamuelW might like it from 2024. I think this is the first of the new 3-year contract so that will see it make 10 series, though I think it'll last at least the length of the Royal Variety contract which was for a decade when signed a couple of years ago.
Can't see The X Factor lasting as long - I guess this year will give us a benchmark on that. And unless the BBC do something incredibly stupid and get Nick Knowles to present this series Strictly won't be going anywhere soon either - and I suspect even if it got to a point where the main series was axed it would still get an outing at Christmas and for Children in Need.
X Factor is a strange one. As long as it's pulling in 7m viewers, it won't be going anywhere because it has a big 16-34 audience, and 7m is still a sizeable audience that will be difficult to replicate. What they need to try and do is make it more of a fun show as it can be very nasty. That's why BGT does so well. I can't see one show lasting longer than the other (although X Factor will by default), I think they'll both be axed at the same time. What I can see happening is BGT moving to autumn and X Factor to spring, which I believe was the original idea in 2011 so Cowell and Cole could do both the UK and US versions.
Different strokes for different folks I guess! It seems like, other than putting the soaps back, that ITV have lost the Sunday 7pm slot for good now.
Catchphrase and OTR are still rating solidly, especially when you consider some much of the schedules can rate with a number starting with a 2 thesedays.
The fact that large numbers of the population want nothing more from their Sunday evening than Countryfile week in week out even at Easter is best ignored by ITV. These viewers will never want for anything else in that slot.ITV need to aim to attract the largest number of the remainder.

Countryfile I watch mostly for the weather, but I'd sooner watch Catchphrase and ITV know that millions aren't interested in a farmer talking about lambing and have a valid alternative.

If you watched Countryfile regularly you would know it's a bit more than farmers talking about lambing, they deal with many issues including political ones - did the gassing of badgers recently, fox hunting etc. Anyhow six million people seem to prefer it to dreary quizzes on ITV.
Not too bad for Endeavour, although its a shame in not above 7million. The Crimson Field looks to have got a bigger drop in consolidated figures than overnights, down 1million from the 1st episode. A potentially low 6million figure after timeshift for last night episode.
Do you know what Perspectives got last night at 10[m? Thanks

Though if you watched Catchphrase you would know it is not dreary, but fun.

However, no one can fault the ratings and this has gone from a Sunday morning PSB to quite a big ratings hit.
Speaking of dreary quizzes, when does The Chase take a break?

Thanks DMN. Good to see The Crimson Field still managing a decent timeshift (+1.47m.) Hopefully the overnights can level off where they are and the officials can settle in the low 6s.
The BBC seem to be hammering Pointless non stop. Rather like The Weakest Link, I think viewer fatigue will set in, same as Eggheads, after Revenge of the Egghead, has seen its ratings drop by a third.
I was wondering if anyone knows if the overnight audience for the first screening of Five show Helix: 959k (6.9%) includes both episodes 1 and 2. Or is that just episode 1's figure? Episode 2 did air at around 11pm on January 20,2014 if that's any help. Thanks in advance.
The next step on the BBC's domination of the TV schedule is to scatter Pointless specials throughout the day every day.
Escape to the Country Pointless Special
Flog It Pointless Special
The One Show Pointless Special
EastEnders Pointless Special
you get the idea
Not forgetting BBC Two's endless series of Eggheads, which will probably end up as The Great Eggheads Sewing Bee, Coast with CJ De Mooi, Great Eggheads Train Journeys, the Eggheads Do Rev.

Theres no sign of Pointless' ratings dropping. In fact, it is still beating The Chase every single day [excluding +1]. And watch its average go up next month. Pointless airing 7 days a week is a good strategy by BBC1, it automatically hooks in a guaranteed 17%+ of the audience [normally over 20%] whatever slot it airs in. Perfect stuff.
As for Countryfile, BBC One need to consider doing a Countryfile spin-off for Wednesdays 8pm. Would hook in a substantial audience for that slot. I'd call it CountryFile Extra. Have Matt Baker hosting that too.

Pointless might be doing well now, but overkill can destroy shows. DOND being on six days a week all year round has seen its ratings drop by 80 pc and the same thing can happen to. There does seem to be a trend with BBC One to absolutely milk their shows to death.

Yes they do and considering the amount of people they reach week to week, I think it'd be puerile and imbecilic to state otherwise.
