If The X Factor lost 30% of its audience you'd look stupid arguing that it was still getting nearly three quarters of the audience. ITV shouldn't be meaningless to 30% of the audience because it's a mainstream free-to-air channel that's supposed to appeal to everyone.
The argument is that 30% of people simply don't think about ITV and one of its problems in recent years is that the audiences for its flagship programmes are all declining and no new ones are coming through. So it needs desperately to get that 30% because it can't rely on the same audience it's always had. And as Dancc says, there is an obvious issue with ITV because people aren't watching their new dramas whereas that doesn't appear to be the case for BBC dramas, so people have clearly lost confidence in the channel and don't trust it, so it needs sorting out.
For my money, ITV under David Liddiment was a great example of a popular TV channel, it had a lot of swagger about it and it did some interesting stuff without alienating its core audience. These days there are clearly issues and it can't afford to be complacent.
Well, it may have given it some structure but it doesn't mean that anybody wanted to watch them, you don't commission tokenistic regional and political programmes just for the sake of it. BBC1 used to have to show religious stuff at 6.40 on a Sunday and now it can be anything and that's not much of a problem, is it? The problem with ITV is that it's been replaced with rubbish but it's clearly not a priority for them.
Speaking of Sunday daytime, mind, I find it very strange that Sunday Politics has now been moved to 11am, just an hour after Andrew Marr has finished which does more or less the same thing.
Yes, absolutely this, I've been saying this for ages and I'm amazed nobody has pointed this out.

I think we all know the Newsnight research 'broke' the story, ITV1 Tonight jumped on it, Panorama came clean about it - we can only hope nobody else was implicated, if their was indeed a TOTP 'paedophile ring' as claimed - this investigation could drag on for years more.
Would this one have been better? http://i455.photobucket.com/albums/qq279/jcrx_album/peado.png  The bbc put that shot in the tribute programme!
I think it will go down as ITV1's 'Scoop of the Year'.
He always looked creepy.
He always seemed to look old.
You of course will be reserving judgement until you've seen it for yourself. No ?
What are the current ITV 1 idents? I will have an opinion on the new ones im sure (when they are public, or this thread is given a sneak peak), just not sure what I should be comparing them to.
I dont know what sort of value a rebrand will have. I'm not going to watch a programme just because it's preceded by a pretty logo.
They probably want them to be memorable. And memorable doesn't have to equal good.
ITV is not a price comparison website (unless I missed that memo), it should want its idents to reflect the image it is going for. Cheap, shoddy and annoying is not a good look for ITV.
iaindb whilst its true that new & better programs are more important, it does no harm to refresh the packaging, to put in line with those programs.
The theme of "heart" is very feminine, so I dont hold out much hope for it, I suspect it will not go over well with ITVs male viewers, but since they are all watching ITV 4, they wont be watching ITV1s new idents.
Fair enough; I have no idea why anyone would watch ITV1 in the first place.
Saying that, another thing to consider if how much will the channel matter if ITV ever gets the ITV Player working, ok its important that "ITV" is mentioned, but does it really matter what channel the show aired on, on TV, when your watching it online?
This extended out to all TV channels, and there online partner services.
That's quite high, that should be just over a million in the officials.
Carrying on from the discussion about why CBBC overnights are not posted on here often, if the ratings were over 500k (which doesn't happen that often) would they be posted? I've seen some ratings of 200-300k or even lower that are still posted.
We do not have any say whatsoever in what Broadcast, Digital Spy or Media Guardian post. All of the media websites have access to the overnight ratings, and yes, that includes CBBC. But they are not obliged to post every rating, they cherry pick the best ones out, as you would expect. 99 times out of the 100, that does not include CBBC. There's no reason to report CBBC ratings, I don't anticipate anyone going to the Media Guardian website for example looking for CBBC ratings really.
The Sarah Jane Adventures is the exception, because was part of the Doctor Who brand, and so is Tracy Beaker the exception.
The only way CBBC ratings will get reported by Digital Spy and the such like is if it recorded 'anomaly' ratings over 1 million or had high enough ratings so that it entered ITV Media's top 10 for a particular day.
There's not much we can do if websites choose not report a certain channel's ratings even though the have access them. Of course you can send polite PM's and e-mails if you want (I have in the past if there are ratings that I want/need that have not been reported).
Its the long forgotten Fix It forerunner Clunk Click which is gaining ever more airplay. The end shots with Savile and Gary Glitter sitting in the crowd will probably become the signature shots of this huge horrible sorry mess.
